Natural climate change and variability
Madden-Julian Oscillation The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is a very large area of convection that starts in the Indian Ocean, and moves eastward along the Equator. It usually moves slowly, but can weaken and change into a smaller, faster type of storm as it continues to march across the Pacific Ocean. The convection usually lasts for 30 to 60 days, and then dies out in the central Pacific, although it affects weather and climate all over the planet. The areas of storminess are followed by weeks of dry air. Next page -> North Atlantic Oscillation Links and resources |
