Ocean circulation

The upwelling water is also vital to fishing communities because it is very nutrient-rich. The nutrients are an important food source for fish, and the fish in turn are an important food source for many other creatures, including humans.

The map below of ocean chlorophyll shows where life is most active in the world's oceans. Notice the "hot spots" (reds) of activity along the western coasts of North and South America and Africa.
