Paleoclimate
Volcanoes Another factor affecting climate is volcanoes. On a short time scale, volcanic emissions break up some of the incoming solar radiation and have an overall cooling effect. For example, Mt. Pinatubo erupted in June of 1991, resulting in cooler global temperatures by about 1 degree F until 1993. On long time scales, increased periods of volcanism are associated with increased levels of greenhouse gases and have a warming effect. Learn more about volcanic influences on climate here.
