Recent" Climate Change (In the last 20,000 years)
In the last 20,000 years, since the last ice age ended, global temperatures have
gradually risen, with a few exceptions. The first occurred about 10,000 years
ago and is called the "Younger Dryas". During this time, glaciers briefly
returned in North America and northern Europe. It lasted for about 1,000 years.Why did this happen? Scientists believe it has to do with the North
Atlantic ocean and the
thermohaline circulation.
Over the last 1,000 years, temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere have been cooler than during the 20th century, although this is not the case everywhere. Parts of England were warm enough to support vineyards. During Medieval times, temperatures were relatively warm, and then temperatures cooled until about the 19th century during what is called the Little Ice Age.
