What happens inside a cloud?
Large-scale Processes You have probably noticed before that individual clouds are often part of an organized system. An example is the squall line, or a line of convective clouds. Sometimes, squall lines can bend so that from the air they look like a bow. In this case, they are called bow echoes and they are associated with strong, potentially damaging winds. Sometimes, the gusts of wind that precede a thunderstorm can cause a special kind of cloud, called a shelf cloud. These are spectacular looking clouds, as you can see from the pictures on this page.
