What Improvements do Models Need to be More Accurate?
Clouds Just think of all the clouds you've seen. There are huge cloud systems like those in tropical storms and hurricanes that can cover several southern states. Then there are much smaller individual cumulonimbus clouds that float across the midwest sky in the summertime. Because of this large variation in cloud size and type, there are multiple areas where improvements are needed for the representation of clouds in models. Each of these improvements increases the complexity of the model. Even if we understood all of the processes involved with a particular cloud's lifespan, computers are still not fast enough to include them all in a global model. That is why multi-scale modeling is an invaluable tool in understanding weather and climate. Let's take a look at some specific cloud-related problems scientists are working on in the next page.
