How Do Models Make Clouds?
for more advanced readers MASS FLUX SCHEME This scheme tries to calculate some of the variables involved in the cloudy regions of a grid cell. General Idea This scheme creates one large cumulus cloud in each grid cell, which is assumed to represent the average properties of each individual cumulus cloud in that cell. Each grid cell has a separate set of equations for in-cloud heat, moisture, and mass. The small-scale, vertical motions of heat and moisture can also be calculated within and outside of the cloud. Pros and Cons This is the most realistic scheme listed so far. The equations include the rate at which air moves into and out of the bulk cumulus cloud. These rates can be adjusted to be more realistic. Also, it is possible to calculate the effects of condensing water vapor based on the in-cloud properties. However, since it contains so many equations, this scheme is pretty complex and will slow down the model, taking a lot more computer time, memory and disk space.
