Measuring weather
ASOS sends out hourly and special messages via coded messages known as METARs. The messages are also formatted and saved for other purposes, such as computer generated voice observations provided directly to aircraft. Weather observations from ASOS also are provided in many map-based forms. One example is a map of coded weather information symbols called "station plots" as you can see below. You can learn how to decode station plots here. ![]()
There are personal weather stations you can buy for your own house and yard. You
can hook these up to your computer to watch how the wind, temperature and
pressure are changing over time and record it on a graph. Their measurements are
typically not used for official weather/climate records or forecasting purposes.
