Measuring weather
Instruments that measure atmospheric pressure are called barometers and have existed in various forms since the 1600s. When shorter or taller columns of air move over a barometer, they respond by motion in their parts. For instance, when pressure increases over an aneroid barometer, the aneroid cell contracts causing motion in the recording arm of the instrument toward higher values on its dial or paper.
