Mountain effects Another example of the effects of topography is the island of Kauai in Hawaii. This island lies within the trade winds region, and so winds usually come from the northwest. It also has some large mountains, up to 5,148 feet (Mt. Waialeale). The winds coming off the Pacific Ocean hit the mountains and pour out more than 400 inches (10 m) of rainfall each year. But the leeward side of the mountain is usually much drier and gets as little as 18 inches (457 mm) of rain each year. Special thanks to Dan Ward and Jonathan Vigh for their help with this section!
