Heather Morgan spent her summer trying to improve Atlantic hurricane predictions
using the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). Having a strong passion for disaster
research, Heather was trying to find a connection between the MJO and Atlantic
hurricanes. Along with her faculty mentor, Professor Eric Maloney, they came up
with ways to start looking at this connection.
Heather's summer was filled with numerous computer programs in FORTRAN and NCL.
She created plots in NCL, which she began to learn this summer, such as the
genesis locations of Atlantic hurricanes and the position of genesis locations
of Atlantic hurricanes as a function of the MJO phase. After 10 weeks, her
research found a strong cycle of Atlantic hurricanes as a function of the MJO,
that certain phases produced more hurricanes
than others, and the likelihood of categories forming in the Atlantic Ocean.
She plans to continue this research,
which is only in the beginning stages, back at Millersville University, where
she is currently a senior Meteorology major. Her research poster
may be found here.
Heather likes playing soccer, going to the gym, hanging out with friends,
reading, listening to music, biking, hiking and attending concerts in her free
time.
