Weather and Climate for Educators
2013 Professional Development Series for Teachers
Weather, climate, and climate change are important topics in today's society.
Many science educators are expected to teach these subjects even with no formal
training in these areas. Our two Weather and Climate for Teachers courses,
sponsored by CMMAP and the
Little Shop of Physics, was redesigned for 2013.
The intent of the courses was to provide college-level content on the physics of
the atmosphere, weather, climate, climate change, and climate modeling as well
as demonstrate activities for use in the classroom. The courses were taught using
the method of the Five E's, each describing a phase of learning (engage,
explore, explain, extend, and evaluate).
Teachers received a stipend, one graduate course credit at CSU, and a box
of science tools to use in their classrooms. Science tools included heat
packs, which show that liquids release heat when they freeze, solar cells to
charge batteries, and infrared goggles to see infrared radiation outside. More
importantly, participants left the course with the confidence and
knowledge to teach their students about weather, climate, and climate change.
Course Overview
This year we offered two courses in our professional development series:
"The Science of Weather and Climate" and "Weather and Climate Across the Globe."
The Science of Weather and Climate
This 3 day course, targeted at elementary/middle school teachers,
was held on the CSU main campus at the home of Little Shop of Physics
July 8-10. Participants learned about the scientific principles that underly our
planet's weather and climate.

Weather and Climate Across the Globe
Our second 3 day course was held at CMMAP on the CSU Foothills Campus July
10-12. This was an in depth course on weather and climate. It was intended for
middle and high school teachers of earth systems science who were looking to
extend and solidify their knowledge of weather and climate concepts.
