What causes the weather?
The mass of the atmosphere is not evenly distributed around the world. You can
determine this for yourself by looking at a weather map like the one to the
right.
You are probably used to seeing pictures like this on the news. The low
pressure areas (marked by the red L's) are
usually associated with storms, like the one off the coast of the Carolinas in
this forecast. The high pressure systems (marked by blue
H's) are associated with clear skies, like
the one over Texas. These systems are just a redistribution of the weight of the
