What causes the weather?
The mass of the atmosphere is not evenly distributed around the world. You can determine this for yourself by looking at a weather map like the one to the right. You are probably used to seeing pictures like this on the news. The low pressure areas (marked by the red L's) are usually associated with storms, like the one off the coast of the Carolinas in this forecast. The high pressure systems (marked by blue H's) are associated with clear skies, like the one over Texas. These systems are just a redistribution of the weight of the atmosphere as it tries to adjust to temperature differences. Next page -> under pressure, continued Links and resources |
