Measuring weather
remote observation - satellite

A satellite, by definition, is something that revolves around a larger body. In
the case of weather observation, we are, of course, talking about man-made,
electronic satellites that revolve around Earth.
In addition to satellites for
things like communication and navigation, multiple weather satellites are
currently in orbit around Earth. Since there is generally no atmosphere present
near these satellites, they are remote sensing instruments.
Most of the
instruments carried on weather satellites are passive sensors, measuring
specific wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation emitted from or reflected by
Earth and using these measurements to infer various properties of the atmosphere
and surface. The information gathered goes on to guide decisions and study in
fields as diverse as economics, security, agriculture, health, and climate.
Most weather satellites carry several instruments, and many instruments look at
multiple wavelengths of radiation.
In this section
and here, we present a few
examples of the various instruments on weather satellites.
